Back Up Your Website Or The Kitten Get’s It!

This weekend I have spent my evenings and nights recovering a website! The client who will remain nameless on the understanding that they never ever again not listen to the advice that they are given!

So this brings me to my bit of advice to anyone and everyone who has a website not just those with a wedding website. Do not rely on your web host to create you a backup of your website. It is not their responsibility.

If you are unsure how to do this then talk to your web designer or webmaster to get information on how to do this. For a few pounds of your hard earned cash you could save yourself from a £750 bill for needing to call your webmaster at the weekend to tell him you didn’t listen to what you were told and you’ve lost your website!

Backing up is painless and there are thousands of ways to do it, some free and some cost a little cash but don’t ever take it for granted that it is included in your hosting package. They back up their servers but they will not back up your entire website for you (yes believe it or not they are two different things).

I will in a later post put some methods together on how to create a backup of your website and keep it safe but at 2am on a Sunday night/Monday morning I thought it important to get the message out quickly!

Wordpress Logo

You might have noticed that in the past few days you have come across the yellow bar in your WordPress installation for upgrading to the new version is there and available for you to upgrade. If you weren’t aware the new version WordPress 3.2 is called Gershwin and has an absolute stack of changes from the last version. Check out the video below and see what we mean:

Now many people seem to forget that it is important when they upgrade that they make sure that they back up their wordpress installation and their database before they click on the upgrade button. This then means that they are taking the risk that their site could stop functioning properly. Not all plugins and themes are completely compatible with the upgrades.

Knowing that many of you are not completely up with the whole backup and upgrade thing we are offering a service to upgrade for you! For £25 we will back up your wordpress database, backup all your theme and plugin files for you and upgrade your WordPress installation. Should anything go wrong we will restore back to the previous version of WordPress so your website is not out of action for any length of time.

Should you wish to have us upgrade for you simply fill out the contact form below with your details and we will contact you to let you know the next steps.

Fetcham Park Tweet Up Review

Fetcham Park

Last Thursday evening I have the privilege of talking to a larger audience than I was expecting at the stunning Fetcham Park for the Weddings in Surrey Tweetup event organised by Pamela Wallin and supported by Wedding Ideas Magazine. During the talk I covered a number of different subjects all to help people with their SEO and increase their ranks.

So a quick overview of what I talked about is below and I hope it helps.

Having a nice looking website

Now Google allows you to preview your website before you even visit it, it is important that you make sure that your website looks attractive on the eye. Other wise those that are searching for your website can view your Google preview and that could put them off straight off the bat. This means that you might end up being ranked number one and getting no traffic what so ever. This also reduces your bounce rate (where people arrive on your site and leave without actually doing anything.).

So good site design is becoming more and more essential to getting traffic through to your website.

Website Navigation

If your visitors get lost or stuck in a loop they will get frustrated and leave your website. For this very reason it is extremely important that you have good navigation on your website and you are sending them in a very logical direction to not only get to the goal that they are trying to achieve but what you are also trying to achieve.

This also helps the search engines get to what they need to see on the website as well, meaning that you are guiding the search spiders (no not the crawly kind but the program that looks through your website for the search engines) to exactly where you want them to go as well. This is the sign of a well structured website and will help all your pages rank and get you a better ranking.

Your Visitors Own Your Website

I got a few strange looks when I mentioned this one but I have to say it is the way things go. If you honestly want to make your web strategy a success then you need to think about what your visitors want to see on your website when they visit it will be much better for your business long term. Here is the thing, as much as YOU love your website and it does everything YOU want it to do, your visitors (your future customers) might not be getting what they want from it.

The knock on effect to this is that they go somewhere else or are frustrated before they even get around to contacting you. Hand over ownership to your customers and clients by talking to them and finding out what they were looking for when they were looking for you online. A little research in this area goes a very very long way.

Use Video on Your Website

I was helped with this bit on the evening by Mark Hammett (from Blue Dragonfly Films) who is a Videographer and the only videographer that was there on the evening. Youtube was purchased by Google, in turn that pointed towards video being very important within the search results and that it would become a ranking factor.

Your videos need to be informative and of a half decent quality but you can make use of tools available to you to produce them if you are worried about being in front of the camera. For those that are brave enough to get in front of the camera just talk naturally as though you would to a client (a bit like when you write a blog post) and you will get your message across clear and easy.

Once you have your video post it on Youtube or Vimeo and then embed that into your website using the code they give you (compete technophobes please ask your webmaster or designer to help you with this and the next bit) then once it is embedded you will be able to create a video sitemap. Now for those of you using WordPress this is really easy you can install the Video Sitemap Plugin which will build your sitemap automatically. Then you submit that sitemap to Google Webmaster Tools (You do have an account with them don’t you?), then Google crawls your website and your video is visible to the search engines. If you build links to the page with the video on (by getting it tweeted and posted on Facebook etc) then you will see the benefits.

Google Plus Business Pages

The Google Plus social network is going to have an impact on search! Google don’t bring out sites or buy sites that are going to be ineffective in helping your website in some way. In this case the social footprint of Twitter, Facebook, Youtube (yes it is a social network as well) and Google Plus are becoming more and more important within the search algorithm.

If you haven’t got a Google Plus account then you need a Google account to get one which you can sign up for one here and then once you have your Google Plus account on the menu bar within Google Plus (could be left or right depending which way the wind is blowing on that day) you will see the button to create your Google Plus Business Page.

Some examples of good branded pages are:

Google Places Rankings

This was probably the biggest pleaser of the night and seems to be a big Holy Grail of a lot of people at the moment and rightly so. Your local visitors are in many cases the exact audience you are looking for and in many cases people prefere to deal with people close to them geographically in order to get them the best possible service.

In order to get good Google Places listings there are a number of things that you need to do:

  • Claim your Google Places page
  • Add a land line to your listing if possible (if you haven’t got one or don’t want to publicise your home telephone number then services like Smart Numbers allow you to have a number diverted to your mobile)
  • Get an physical address in the location you want to be found. If you are aiming at getting ranked in Manchester and live in Cornwall then getting listed in the Google places pages is going to be very difficult (well impossible unless you know tricks no one else does). Virtual offices can act as a god send if you are really trying to branch out and want to expand further afield. (Virtual office addresses cost money but long term it will benefit if this is the route you wish to choose).
  • Add your website to the important local directories such as BrownBook.net and FreeIndex.co.uk and make sure the information you are posting in ALL directories is the same. If you call your company “Wedding Company Ltd” in one and “Wedding Company Limited” in another then that is something completely different in the eyes of the search engines.
Following these steps will help you get a higher ranking in the Google Places pages. Extra Tips will be available on our Google Plus Wedding Circle so if you like our page and send us a message then we will make sure you are in that circle.

Use Twitter To Boost Your Traffic and SEO

Making friends and influencing people is what good business on Twitter is all about. Lets face it there are people on there who spend an awful lot of time chatting but at the same time they have a lot of followers and as such carry a lot of authority. So who wouldn’t want to be friends with someone who could retweet your business message just because they like your products and you have made conversation with them, rather than just randomly asking someone with a lot of followers to retweet your message?
Talk to people and share information and advice, also NEVER be afraid to help someone and offer them information it will come back and benefit you long term.

Guest Blog to Increase Your Authority

There were a number of bloggers at the Tweet up, well there were once I had asked who had a blog on their website, although it was the full time ones I was after.  These full time bloggers have a great deal of power online and their websites become very well known with a great deal of readers. So having your company or your product or even information that you provide on your blog you will gain authority links into your website along with the power of being on the blog itself and the visitors that brings you alone.
HOWEVER please bare in mind that they cannot feature all your work, you need to target the blogs that are best for your product that your target audience is looking at. Choose carefully and make sure you read the blog and become a regular commenter and contributor by making helpful comments and you will then stand a better chance of getting somewhere when you contact them to ask if you can guest blog post for them.
When guest blogging make sure you keep your content to the highest quality and completely unique to their blog or it will not get published.

When the Camera Lies! Photographers Need to Add Text

Oh the groans when I mentioned that a picture can’t actually speak a thousand words! However it is true the search spiders rely on you to tell them what is in an image using the Alt tag in the image code (you also need to create and submit an image sitemap which again if you are using WordPress comes with a very handy plugin). BUT text is the best way to get your blog posts to rank better for you.
Your text needs to be around 300 words (500 if best but 300 will work) and it needs to be friendly and written towards your visitors rather than the search engines which will mean you keep people on your website for longer.

I think that has covered everything, if I have missed anything the please feel free to drop me a note steve@ukweddingseo.co.uk and I will write a backup post to cover that as well. I hope this has helped everyone.

The event was incredible with an amazing show of talent on show from all areas of this wonderful industry. I want to extend my thanks to all that participated as well as all those who attended. If you did attend and would like us to take a sneak at your website and send you a five minute overview of our initial thoughts and some tips on how you can improve your site and your SEO then please fill in the form below and we will send this to you within the next 10 days. (please note this is only available to those who attended the Tweet Up) Oh and please feel free to share this with as many people as possible.

UK Wedding SEO a Year in Review

As many of you know UK Wedding SEO has been running for a year as of the 11th of January but as 2012 draws to a close I wanted to just give you all some idea of what we have achieved this year so far with only 2 weeks to go!

Our Team Has Grown

Yes we went from being a one man band to expanding out to having a team of three! Yes the one man and his dog experience lasted until September this year when we were joined by our PA and assistant Tiana as well as Hannah who is taking on Website Design. It doesn’t stop there as during 2012 the plan is to expand again with some more bodies on the SEO team to ensure we continue to give the best service to our clients and get them rankings, traffic and clients.

Website Design
Website design hasn’t been a major part of what we were planning to do with the business but I have to say it became a massive part of the business this year. We launched over 30 websites this year as well as helping a number of others with their website designs as well.

When you think that this wasn’t part of the original plan launching over 2 websites a month has been something that we are very proud of and seeing the businesses that we have launched for progress and get amazing comments about their sites as their businesses grow has been very rewarding.

Site Reviews
When I realised that not everyone was able to afford an SEO package I introduced the site review to our services. When I did I had absolutely no idea how popular they would be and how much of an impact that they would have on peoples businesses. So much so when we ran a contest last year for someone to win a site review the winner wrote to us telling us that the website traffic had gone up over 50% in 2 months.

During the year we have carried out over 50 site reviews for our clients totalling over 275,000 words.

Search Engine Optimisation
The core of what we do and I have to say the rapid growth of what we have achieved this year. With 26 monthly clients on SEO contracts we are working on a daily basis to make sure that our clients get the benefit of our SEO skills by having activity going on a daily basis.

During the year…..

We track over 1000 keyphrases daily
We test over 10,000 pages of our clients websites and sites they have content on daily.
We have built over 45,000 links
We created over 10 hours of video and distributed it into over 200 hours of video online.
We have clients ranked number one in Google UK for over 500 keywords that we track.
We have over 5000 tracked keywords on the front page of Google.
We have six clients as finalists for major awards in January.
And to top it all Steve lost 5 stone in weight and ran a half marathon!

All of this and we still have 2 weeks to go!!!! Exciting things to come in 2012 as well….

New Dedicated Web Design Agency
SEO Hints and Tips Videos through the UK Wedding SEO site
Mobile Application Development for Small Business
Moving to New Offices
And somewhere Steve is going to find the time to run the Paris Marathon (all 26.2 miles of it)

So as always to quote someone I can’t remember “It’s gonna be a hell of a ride and we would love to have you along with us!”

Happy New Year everyone may it be successful and full of laughter and fun the whole year long!

Email is the Thorn in my Side….

….or is it the pain in my ***?

Over the past few weeks we have launched 15 websites. Normally we would aim at 2 a week max but in the space of 8 days we launched 9 websites, so there hasn’t been much sleep going on at The Den I can promise you. However I have to say that most of the launches went fairly smooth without a hitch, others were a bit more complex due to external forces that the I have released my very own 005.5 to search and destroy.

The biggest issue of late has been email. Every one has a different email system, some download and store locally, others store things on a server. Some never delete ANYTHING others have 2 emails in their inbox and they feel they are being spammed as they have never had so many in one day (ok that is a bit of an exaggeration but hey it gets the point across). Emails going missing due to other peoples email servers being blacklisted, emails bouncing back because they are going to the wrong address, I’ve had the lot over the past few weeks. Well there is a solution for one and all and YES IT COSTS MONEY so if you don’t want to spend money on making sure your emails don’t vanish then don’t bother reading and please don’t moan (it’s like not voting in a general election, if you don’t do anything about it you don’t have the right to keep moaning).

If you want to get a mission critical (99.999999999999999999999% up and safe) emails system then I suggest and recommend using Google Apps (http://www.google.com/apps). It allows you to have your email through your own domain, your calendar attached to your email, shared documents, your Google+ and Google Places as well as your Contacts all on the Gmail system yet using your own email account. The cost is a whopping £3.30 per email address per month and for that if you decide you don’t want to delete anything ever you don’t have to cause you have 25GB of email space to store all your …..very important emails.

So why is it good? Well if your web server goes down or blows up your email still works. If you want to access your email anywhere and everywhere on the planet (iPhone, android, Windows phone, PC, Mac, iPad, Tablet etc) and the up time on it is incredible. As long as you have access to the interwebby you will be able to access your emails and contacts etc.

WAIT A SECOND….. before you run off to sign up then come back telling me I’m wrong and it didn’t work, you have to set it up properly. You need to import your files and you will need to read the help file on how to do this. You will need to import your contacts, your calendar and your email over, if you don’t IT WON’T BE THERE. So make sure you read the setup and you book in the time of the tech person you will need to move over from one to the other or you might well come a cropper!

So that is how I am now advising EVERYONE who asks me about email how to sort their emails issues.

How To Avoid Website Issues When Upgrading WordPress

$

If you have had your WordPress website for a little while now you will know the bar at the top that utters the words to put the fear of the Titans into anyone will be coming to your website shortly…… ”WordPress 4.5 is available! Please Update Now.” This phrase puts the fear into us developers as well, mainly because we know that some of you see this as a red rag to a bull and can’t resist hitting that upgrade button without any parachute or crash helmet! So with the the release of WordPress 4.5 coming in the next few weeks we are going to take a look at how to avoid website issues when upgrading WordPress.

Hosting and Backup

Where a lot of people who we work with have their own hosting and we respect that they like to stick to what they are used to, we have a recommended hosting company for a reason. SiteGround Hosting is the best that we have come across and their specialised WordPress hosting and caching is excellent for making sure that your site is kept secure and safe. Now due to the fact that SiteGround is our recommended hosting company we will be making references to some of their features within this article that will back up our choice of recommended hosting company. One of their features is an excellent backup service that makes sure that you don’t have to worry about your site getting a solid backup.

Good hosting with a good backup means that you can run your updates safe in the knowledge that if nothing works then you have a fall back to make sure your business isn’t offline. A while back after spending most of my weekend restoring a photographers website, I wrote a blog post called “Backup Your Website or the Kitten Gets It!” well the same applies today, even more so today! You need to ensure that your website is fully backed up and that you have a copy of everything before you start clicking buttons with “Upgrade” written on them.

So you have good hosting and a solid backup solution through your hosting company (please even if you are using SiteGround check that you have a backup solution) what comes next?

Well we advise that you use what is known as a Staging Server (yep you guessed it another feature with SiteGround, can you see why we use them?).

What is a Staging Server?

A staging server is basically a copy of your website that if you click away and it messes up your website when you upgrade you haven’t made a complete mess of your website and you are protected by this copy being hidden from public view. Very handy when you are trying to do it quickly.SiteGround Staging Server

If you log into your SiteGround hosting there is an option to select Staging (You will need
their GoGeek package but it is worth it) Then you will be asked to create a staging copy.

Create a Staging ServerYou can password protect the copy which is advisable so the search engines don’t accidentally find it. Once you have done this and filled out the self explanatory boxes click on the “Create Staging Copy” button and bingo you have a copy of your website probably on http://staging1.yourwebsite.com.

What you can then do is completely update everything on your site and test to see if it is all working on a copy of your site that is not visible to the public. Much better than being offline or the site looking a bit screwy for a few days while you try to get the backup restored.

Once you have updated your site you can simply go back into your hosting control panel, go toPush Staging Server to Live the staging server section, open your copy of the staging server and do an Easy Push to Live. BINGO you have an updated website live.

IMPORTANT NOTE!

If you make changes to your live site, such as adding images or changing text even adding a blog post you will need to import that and replicate the changes on your staging server or they will not be visible and be overwritten by your staging copy.

If when you have run your updates and your theme is all wonky and your website just doesn’t look right or doesn’t function right, then start your diagnostics by going to the kettle (or fridge) getting a cup of tea or coffee (beer or wine) and spend that time cursing and cussing before realizing it doesn’t matter because you have not updated your main site just the core of the staging server. (Clever ain’t it?)

At this point you have a few options, you can either opt to try and repair the issues yourself, if you are tech savvy then this is probably a good option, you could even look towards your web developer or designer to help you, or you can simply delete the staging copy and create a new one so you don’t have to fix it and you can attempt again.

If you are going to have a go at fixing it yourself you might want to start by disabling the plugins on the site, changing the theme and seeing if the site functions with another theme. If your site works with another theme then you can turn your theme back on to see if it works without plugins. If it works without plugins then you can turn one plugin on at a time to see which one isn’t working properly. By following this process of diagnostics you will be able to tell what the problems are before you either attempt to fix yourself or go through your developer, either way this process will mean you have saved yourself and or your developer a whole heap of time (and if you are using a developer a whole heap of money) discovering where the issues are!

The most amazing thing about a staging server is that you can’t break your website, unless you do something spectacular then it will be worth a case study so let us know!

Hosting Support is Important

So we have spoken about one of the amazing features of the Siteground hosting, another thing they offer is first class support. Even to the point where they will help you solve some of your issues during upgrade if you ask them nicely. Their support is second to none and if you are going to manage your own website then you need the backing of a very good hosting company in order to avoid issues when upgrading WordPress and making changes to your website full stop.

The Alternative

As with most things technical we did notice that some of you started to glaze over half way through the staging server part of this post, not to worry if you are not tech savvy and you are worried about your ability to upgrade your WordPress yourself and would like to hand the responsibility over to someone who knows better, then look no further. Our maintenance plans keep your site up to date and free from nasties should anything happen.

Top Tip

If you are interested in SiteGround hosting but you think they are a little too expensive for you, there is a little tip in the video below that should give you a little discount on your monthly costs.

We hope you have found this little guide to making sure you don’t have issues when upgrading WordPress helpful and insightful and more importantly we hope that by making the simple change or having your website maintained and managed helps you free up valuable time for your business that could be wasted on your updates.

Getting Your Images Ranked In Google Images

$
0
0

Working within the wedding industry we get asked quite a lot how to go about getting images ranked in Google Image Search. Google Image search is a similar beast to the Google search, the only difference is that there are other factors that you need to take into consideration before you can expect to get any form of ranking. These are not totally guaranteed to get you a ranking that brings you millions of visitors, however image search along with good search rankings can long term bring you a steady stream of visits, especially if you are targeting what we like to call low hanging fruit keyphrases.

So what do you need to do in order to get better ranked in Google Images?

Here goes…Make sure Your Images are Unique!

If you are in a group of images that are all the same then how are you going to stand out from the crowd? Unique images are important for ranking, if you are targeting a venue then make sure that you have images that show the venue in the style of your own photography or work. Don’t ever steal anyone elses photos, it is childish and basic theft! Get permission to use peoples work if you are going to use it! In many cases in the wedding industry photographers are very forth coming when it comes to their images as long as they are credited with the image and not just have their image thrown up on a website. Make sure you give the photographer credit!

Name Your Images Properly

St Marys Church Kingswinford

Website designers are lazy beasts (sorry guys but it is true) when it comes to images on a website they get sent the images and they upload them to the website as they are. This means if your images have been taken straight from an iphone your image is most likely called 2016-01-21-11.30.46.jpg which if you want to get found for that date and time isn’t a bad thing, however lets be serious here. Let’s think that image is of St Mary’s Church in Kingswinford, a much more fitting name for this image file would be st-marys-church-kingswinford.jpg. This simply helps the search engines identify what an image is without having to delve deep into the code of the website. Make sure you name your images properly, before sending them to your web designer if possible! (Not this isn’t St Mary’s Church in Kingswinford, it is Modena Italy, this is at this time a stock photo due to me not having an image of St Mary’s Church!) Use hyphens when naming your images to ensure that your words are separated by spaces in code terms.

Add In Proper Alt Tags (Alternative Text if you are using WordPress)

Normally by the time us SEO’s get to a website the alt tag code around images looks like <img src=’http://www.website.com/st-marys-church-kingswinford.jpg’ alt=”” height=150px width=150px/> Notice the alt=””? Well this bit is where the description of the image has been totally left blank and has no description to tell the search engines what it is. A better example of this is<img src=’http://www.website.com/st-marys-church-kingswinford.jpg’ alt=”St Mary’s Church Kingswinford” height=150px width=150px/> If you are using WordPress then your Image Settings will probably look a little something like the below now:

Getting Your Images Ranked In Google Images

So what makes a good alt tag?

  1. The alt tag needs to be descriptive of the image. Don’t stuff keyphrases in it just doesn’t help. Make it descriptive of the image if you are looking to get the images ranked.
  2. Alt tags should be between 4 and 6 words to make sure that you are not overdoing it.
  3. Keep your 4-6 words to a maximum of 125 characters to ensure that you are within a sensible length and not flooding information into a tag that isn’t designed to have it.

Keep to these three simple rules for your Alt Tags and you will be getting better exposure in the search engines.

As with Alt Tags You Also Need To Make Sure You Have Good Title Tags

“Oh my god…..how many tags are there?” I hear you cry…. well lots but with images they all do something different. An Alt Tag tells the search engines what an image is, a Title Tag on an image is what the user of the website sees when they hover over the image and once you have filled it out in WordPress your image information will now look like the below:

Getting Your Images Ranked In Google Images

The code on that (please don’t glaze over this is just for reference) <img  title=”St Mary’s Church Kingswinford” src=”http://www.Yourwebsite.co.uk/st-marys-church-kingswinford.jpeg” alt=”St Marys Church Kingswinford” /> As you can see in the code you now have an image title and an alt tag which both point out what the image is, the title of the image is separated by hyphens which Google see as a space in code terms (just in case you didn’t get that the first time).

If you have setup your website with Yoast SEO then you will have your sitemap for your website automatically generated, if you are looking to get your images ranked then we advise that you have an Image Sitemap for your website. If you are Using WordPress then this is extremely simple, search for Advanced Image Sitemap and install the plugin that we have linked to. Once you have installed the plugin then get the url of your Image sitemap (probably http://www.yourwebsite.com/sitemap-images.xml) and submit that to Google Webmaster Tools as a sitemap and your images will be indexed in the Google Search Index.

Conclusion

Be descriptive with your image names, alt tags, title tags and page descriptions but don’t be silly with the length. If you are naming images with around 250 characters then chances are you are not doing yourself any favours. If you keep it simple you will see the benefits. This doesn’t work overnight and there are not absolute guarantees that you will get ranked at the top of Google images but this is what we like to call best practice when it comes to adding images to your site.

We hope that this has helped you in your quest to get more images ranked in Google Image Search. How Wedding Venues Can Get More Corporate Leads

Over the past 6 years we have helped a number of wedding venues with their online marketing and SEO and we are delighted to have been invited to many of the venues and enjoyed a lot of events. One of the big questions we are always asked by the wedding venues is ‘How can we get more corporate leads and clients to use the venue?’ It is a challenge to get the higher paying and more likely to result in repeat business client as they are also more likely to use the venue during the week when less wedding are booked. Well it has been a few months of research and training but we are happy to say that there is a solution for Venues that will help them get more corporate clients.

First off let us have a look at some figures!

A Whopping 98% of those B2B visitors that visit your corporate pages are likely to leave your website without actually participating in any form of contact with your venue or your company (lets face it this works on all levels if you are trying to attract corporate clients!). A lot of my day is spent talking to people that say the immortal words “I get a lot of visits to my website if only I could convert those into leads I could convert them!” Analytics will give you a breakdown of your visitors and it will also get you to understand your visitor journey and at what point these customers have left your website.

So if 98% of customers leave without contacting you that leaves you with only 2% of your visitors come through to actually talk to you, then you have your conversion rate on there. By the time you have finished you might convert one in every four hundred visits to your corporate pages! Depending on how many of these are actual bookings and proper leads this works out as an expensive return on investment.

So How Can Wedding Venues Get More Corporate Leads?

OK there is another question that comes to mind first. What if you could get a majority of those 98% of visitors contact details, would you have the structure to be able to convert them into leads and clients? If you have a sales process or a sales team in place to follow up on a whole load more leads than you get at the moment. It will also require a little bit of training and a little effort but all in all this little process works and we have seen some amazing results, it might seem a little freaky at first but overall it is one of the best methods for generating corporate leads available. So there are a few stages with a few steps in each stage, we are going to walk you through all of it and it is well worth it. Remember to stick with it cause the final part makes it all fit into place and gives you access to a majority of those 98% that are leaving the page.

On Site Factors

The first part of this solution is to look at the onsite factors of your website. If you are making things over complicated and making people jump through a million hoops then you are likely to lose the visitor as they will just go to another site where it is easier for them to get what they want and need. So lets take a look at a few things you can do to adjust your onsite issues.

Step One

Make sure your website is set up in a way that you can collect leads and ensure that you don’t miss out on those that are contacting you. We know that you want to collect as much information as possible to reduce the amount of work at your end, but this is the bit before the first date, the bit where you ask for someone’s number and if you can call them. At this point you don’t need to know their inside leg measurement and what the name of their uncle’s cat was when they were 10 years old. Long complicated forms put people off contacting you and if you use a long form to try and nail every last bit of information that you can out of them, you will have a much higher bounce rate.

Keep your contact forms simple. You don’t need to know their address, you don’t need them to login to anything, heck you don’t even need to take their telephone number at this point, simply an email address where you can get some information to them to break into a communication with them. If you ask for too much information, yes you will get qualified leads as you will know a lot more about them but you will also put a lot of people who don’t know exact details off. The below form is the perfect example:

Get more corporate leads

Which Venue? If you have more than one, why does it matter? Is it not easier to break a conversation with someone if you need to contact them to ask these questions and offer any number of different solutions? The same goes for date and delegates. They might not actually know at this point, but because your form is asking for that information you might well have put someone off making contact with you. Do you really need to know their postcode and house number at this point? Yes you have funky software that will work it out for them but why do you actually need it at this first dance point? Truth be known, you don’t!

Step Two

Offer information easily! Every day we visit sites that offer information to people but you have to jump through 50 hoops to get it. I am and always have been a firm believer in the K.I.S.S. method of websites to get people to follow step by step what you want them to do and where you want them to go, if you ask people to do too much then they won’t do it, result is you lose a lead.

Venues are renowned for having beautiful literature and amazing brochures. The internet allows these to be delivered in digital format saving thousands in printing costs, however the delivery of digital content is just that, an opportunity. Ask your visitor for an email address to get them the brochure, a simple form with an auto responder does a number of things:

  1. You deliver your content easily to their inbox, so they have to use a valid email address in order to get it.
  2. You put your email address in their contact list.
  3. In doing one and two you get to follow up with an email that gently asks them if they have any questions that you can answer.

Also remember that to add someone to your email list in the UK doesn’t require you to ask for double authorisation as it does in the USA. (Although keep an eye on this because as this blog post was written the Queen announced in a speech to parliament that companies must get permission before sending promotional emails)

Step Three

Remember that your corporate clients are very different to your wedding clients. Your bride and groom are looking for their perfect day and to be able to not have to worry about a thing, they are looking for details on your services and want to know everything from the bottom to the top, from the start of their day to the very end of it and that you will be able to provide them with everything they are looking for to complete their perfect day. Corporate clients are looking for an executive overview of your services, they want to know that you can offer the services you offer but without all the fluff and fuss that goes with the wedding clients (sorry bride and grooms, sorry to wedding suppliers but when it comes to the difference between the two fluff is by far in the way when it comes to corporate and business clients).

How To Drive More Corporate Clients To Your Website

There are a few things to do that are different to drive corporate clients to your website. In this section we are going to take a look and see what can be done to drive more corporate clients through to your website. This is the next important stage to grabbing those 98% in the final stage.

Information

As we mentioned before, the tone and style of information that you are providing to your corporate clients is very much different to that you are giving to your brides and grooms. In many cases, brides and grooms haven’t got a clue about how to go about booking a venue, where as your average corporate client has probably booked a few venues and arranged a few events already so have a good understanding of the terminology that is used. Don’t try and be flash and use clever wording just see what others are doing with their text and stick to what the normal wording would be, don’t copy others websites but if you are selling a meeting room then call it a meeting room, don’t suddenly come up with a new fandangled title to try and impress as it will just confuse at what it can be used for. Offer your information in every format you possibly can, Word, PDF, Video you name it put it out there.

Also another thing which I know is like stating the bleeding obvious but if you are using email to promote your venue, please make sure you segregate your list from your wedding and your corporate clients. You would be shocked by the number of people we come across that don’t bother with this. If you have a high delete rate on your emails because you are sending corporate information to brides and grooms this can have an effect on your SEO efforts. Have a clean segregated list and you will benefit!

Images

There are a few things we see on a daily basis that make us cringe when we get to a website. A few weeks ago we were asked to look at a venue website and the first thing we noticed was in the corporate section of their website, and they were trying to book conferences and meetings through their site, they had pictures and video of weddings. If you are looking to put images in front of your potential customers then make them targeted. Targeted images will also help you when it comes to being found in the search engines.

Floor Plans

Obviously there is a big difference between the floor plans that you offer for weddings and the floor plans you offer for your corporate events and awards ceremonies. In many cases it helps having PDF downloads of your proposed seating plans to give people ideas of what can be achieved. Remember that you can follow this up with pictures of your events! If you don’t have any seating plans for your events then check out http://www.toptableplanner.com and draw yourself up some table plans, the software is excellent and very easy to use (I can use it and I can break the toaster!). You can also add these to presentations and put them on sites like SlideShare which will help your SEO.

Blog

Offer information, offer guides, offer event coverage, give information about events you have done, interview your suppliers but you need to be blogging to ensure that you are offering up to date and you are keeping those pesky search engines happy!

Social Media

If you are looking for more corporate clients then you need to be looking to get onto more business orientated social media. Yes it helps to be on Twitter and Facebook, Twitter is a great place to get your name out and build a good solid reputation but it is the likes of Facebook which are more geared towards personal use than they are B2B. Look towards making sure that your Linkedin and your Xing accounts are all up to date and you are communicating and building your followers on those networks.

So What About The 98% That Don’t Contact You?

This is where you take your analytics and your traffic to a whole new level. This will push your leads and your conversions through the roof. Have a look at the video below for the Lead Forensics software:

So here is the thing, we know this software works because we use it ourselves! The ability to see who is coming through your website and knowing what their contact details are saves you a whole load of time, gives you the ideal opportunity to discover more about your visitors and what they are looking at.

Here is the key to making this software work for you, your marketing department and your sales department, it will work based on the pages you install it on. So if you want to avoid getting hundreds of people looking at weddings come through to your corporate sales team then simply setup an alert on your software that tells you what pages they have visited and how long they spent on each page. So you can say “If the visitor spends more than 7 seconds on your corporate pages then you would like to be alerted!” Bingo, you get an alert to say you’ve got a corporate lead. On top of that in the software you get a nice easy to understand screen that you can use to discover who your contact would be that is doing the searching.

The REALLY awesome thing with the software is it comes with a success path as the idea of the software is to get you a return on your investment and a constant stream of new customers. You have nothing to lose in simply asking for a free trial from Lead Forensics and taking advantage of seeing what you could be doing. It takes a few seconds to request and is well worth it. To Sum Up

The last thing and the conclusion of this whole thing really is to keep your promotions constant. If you promote sporadically you won’t get the steady flow of visits that your sales team can handle. The key to a lot of online promotion is hard work and there is no question in our minds that all of what is in this article is tried and tested and if you go ahead and implement it then you will see amazing growth in your corporate leads.
